How do ducks float? We used a model (an orange) to find out. Do oranges float or sink? What happens when we peel an orange?
Today in Teretere we learnt about duck feet.
We were investigating 2 of the children's questions- "How do ducks swim?" and "Why do ducks have flipper feet?".
We investigated using scientific models, and explored the used of webbed feet versus non-webbed feet.
In the water photos, we tried using our hand spread open as a model of a foot without webbing, and pushed and pulled it through the water. Then we put a plastic bag over our outstretched hand (webbed foot) and tried it again to see how it was different.
In the umbrella photos, we noticed that umbrellas are similar to ducks feet when they are open and closed. We ran through the air (model for the water) with the umbrella open and closed to see how they were different.
Lots of fun science was had by all!
